PORTRAIT OF A NOBLEMAN WITH BOOK AND HOURGLASS
Oil on wood.
122 x 91 cm.
In wide gilded frame.
Tiberio Titi was the son of Santi di Tito, who came from Borgo Sansepolcro and worked in Florence. Tiberio was a pupil, later an assistant to his father. Tiberio Titi was considered the court painter of the Medici, a post that Justus Sustermans was to dispute with him in 1621.
Kneeling portrait of an elegantly dressed gentleman, whose figure may appear wiry. While one of his hands rests on a table facing a wall highlighted by a pilaster, the other hand holds a book. Another literary work can be made out behind an hourglass standing on the table, the gaze of the head, which is rigid due to the ruff, is directed at the viewer.
