MARIA MAGDALENA Oil on wood. Doubled. 71,1 x 53 cm. Verso four wax seals and two paper labels. In partially gilded magnificent frame. Saint Mary Magdalene is reproduced in three-quarters portrait, standing to the right in front of a wall made of several stone slabs on top of each other at a rock table, holding her arms crossed in front of her chest, while her long curly hair covers her naked upper body. The gaze is humbly directed sideways to the upper corner, but in an ambiguous manner. Standing on the stone is the gray-silver ointment jar with lid. The painting, like many painters in the circle around and after Leonardo da Vinci, also shows its corresponding stylistic features. There are also paintings with almost identical motifs that prove the collaboration of both painters, such as the work of "Santa Maria Magdalena", oil on wood, executed in 1515-1520 by Leonardo da Vinci and Rizzoli, which is located in the Cathedral of Burgos, Spain; in this work, however, the saint looks upwards out of the picture. Provenance: According to Cristina Geddo, who published the painting in 2009, a label formerly on the back of the panel indicated that it came from a gallery of a count in Milan, offered for sale in 1814-1820. The painting here was offered for sale at Christie's New York on January 30, 2013 with lot number 116. Annotation: The artist was a painter of the Lombard school and Leonardo circle. He adapted many of Leonardo's models, but also left his own compositions. Many paintings have been preserved in several versions. Like many painters in the circle of Leonardi da Vinci and later followers, the painting also shows his respective stylistic features. There are also paintings with almost identical subjects that show the collaboration of the two painters, such as Saint Mary Magdalene, oil on panel, painted 1515 - 1520 by Leonardo da Vinci and Rizzoli in the Cathedral of Burgos, Spain; in this work, however, the Saint is looking up and out of the painting. Provenance: According to Cristina Geddo, who published the painting in 2009, a label formerly on the back of the panel indicated its provenance from a count's gallery in Milan, put up for sale in 1814 - 1820.
