Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) Nagaban yoko-e, Two puppies playing in the snow, near a small pine tree, their fur embossed, the snow embossed silver, and poems. Signed Hiroshige ga and Ichiyusai seal (Freckles). 21,2 x 58,6 cm This nagaban was made on the occasion of the new year, to celebrate the passage to the year of the Dog. The surimono were commissioned to the artists by societies of letters, and offered to celebrate the new year, hence their luxurious character. Each of the participants wrote here a line of the poem visible on the left part of the nagaban. Reference : similar print (right part only) in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession n°11.20246.
