Adoration of the Magi, illuminated vellum leaf from a book of Hours. [Paris? c. 1450] 1 f. (15,5 x 11,5 cm), in Latin, 4 ll., in a brown Gothic hand (written area 2,5 x 6 cm). Under passe-partout and wooden frame: 26 x 21,5 cm (not studied outside frame). Well-executed three-quarter page arch-topped miniature (7,5 x 5,5 cm) within a burnished gold frame, richly decorated. Text with 4-line initial in brown with white penwork and delicate blue floral infill on burnished gold grounds and 1-line gold initial. Full gilt decorated borders including acanthus-leaf sprays, other foliage, flowers and fruits. The scene is painted in a stable with the Virgin in blue drapery heightened with liquid gold and the Child on her knees, both surrounded by a gold aureola, encircled by Joseph in a brown cloak heightened with liquid gold and the 3 Magi.
