DIM. 27,5 X 17,5 CM (10 13/16 X 6 7/8 IN.) - NOTE The "Bencao gangmu" is a work of medical matters written in the 16th century comprising 53 volumes, by Li Shizhen (1518-1593), a Chinese naturalist physician and first published in 1593. It is placed in the perspective of the long and rich history of Chinese medical materials (bencao), which has resembled over the centuries information on the medicinal use of natural mineral, vegetable and animal substances. Li Shizhen organizes all medicinal substances into a hierarchical classification system consisting of 16 sections (bu), 60 categories (lei), and about 1,895 records (zhong). Each record of a medicinal substance is very well structured according to a standard plan.
