A flag for a Jingling Johnny of the Infantry Regiment "Herzog Karl von Mecklenburg-Strelitz (6th East Prussian) No. 43, Germany, circa 1890
Multi-layered, light-colored silk cloth (minor isolated tears) decorated with gold fringes on four sides and two gold tassels at the lower corners. In the centre on the obverse the Prussian eagle with imitated feathers of fine brown cloth and black wings of embroidered cloth, surrounded by elaborate silver-gilt embroidery (partly darkened) with oak leaves, interwoven with the embroidered banner with the regimental name "Infant Regt. Herzog Karl v. Mecklenburg-Strelitz (6. Ostpr.) No. 43". On the reverse the crowned sovereign's cypher "WR" in elaborate silver-gilt embroidery (partly darkened) amidst laurel and palm twigs. On top a long horizontal opening of white leather with folded edge for the gilt brass pole with gilt rounded cord for attachment to the Jingling Johnny in the eagle's beak. Slightly damaged in places, traces of age. Dimensions of cloth approx. 30 x 38 cm. Extremely rare and in overall fine condition.
The unit adopted the name "Herzog Karl von Mecklenburg-Strelitz" inscribed on the flag at hand by order of Wilhelm II on 27 January 1889.
