Dimensions : 6,4 x 1,8 cm. - Van Cleef & Arpels: The Modernist Target/Objective In 1931, the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels participated in the "Exposition Coloniale" which was taking place in the Bois de Vincennes. France was then in a context of economical hardship after the 1929 crisis. The jewelry section had gathered twenty-three jewellers who created pieces inspired from African and Eastern crafts and made from exotic materials. Van Cleef and Arpels revealed a yellow gold jewelry set called "Chapeau Chinois" and a coral and ivory necklace. The sets printed in the press show a modern take, almost constructivist, with high contrasted colors and various geometrical shapes combined and interlinked. The few sets that reached us bear witness of this special type of jewelry, somewhat atypical to the style we were used to seing from Van Cleef & Arpels.
