Vessel with bovid from the Amlash culture, early 1st millennium BC. Terracotta. Provenance: - Collection of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (1926-2020). President of the Republic of France from 1974 to 1981. - Received by inheritance in 2020. - French art market, 2023. Attached thermoluminescence test. In good state of preservation. Measurements: 24.5 cm (height) x 23 cm (length). Vessel in the shape of a bovid with a wide body from which the animal's head emerges, delicately moulded in each of its parts, as well as a long, exvessel-like mouthpiece. The term Amlash culture refers to a variety of materials and historical periods in Gilan and west of Mazandaran in northern Iran. Objects found at archaeological sites near the Alborz valleys range in date from the late 2nd millennium BC to the 9th-8th centuries BC. However, the dating and significance of known objects (bronze weapons and animal figurines, terracotta and bronze human figurines, ceramic animal pottery vessels and black, grey or orange polished pottery vessels) is complicated by insufficient archaeological contexts.
