Drums were played on the occasion of social occasions and religious rituals by dignitaries and members of Poro secret societies.
Multi-legged standing drums such as the present one were usually used in accompaniment with xylophones, horns, trumpets, and jingles worn on the wrists or ankles.
The figural decorations carved in half relief come from Senufo mythology.
