The painting here is one of the special and characteristic motifs of the German artist Johann Lingelbach, who spent ten formative years in Rome from 1643. He depicts an everyday market situation in an Italian city: a lot is happening in the teeming scene. People are working, gossiping and shopping. The city dwellers go about their daily tasks. In his painting, Lingelbach creates numerous small scenes that take place simultaneously and all tell their own self-contained story. Above the many small happenings, majestic buildings loom on the horizon, lending depth and breadth to the depiction.
