Le Premier [-Second] volume de la Bible en françoys. Lyon, Pierre Bailly, 1531. 2 volumes in-folio, blond calf, important border of gilt and cold rolled fillets, fleurons in the spandrels and large medallion of interlacing, scrolls and gilt branches in the center, ornate spine, inner lace, gilt edges (19th century binding). Magnificent " Bible historiale " from Lyon, printed in gothic on two columns and illustrated with 142 woodcuts, some of which are repeated - in all 5 large woodcuts and 90 vignettes. A beautiful engraved frame is repeated on the two titles, which are printed in red and black and decorated with a portrait of Saint Jerome for the first and the mark of Pierre Bailly for the second. This edition is a reprint of the one that Pierre Bailly had printed by Jacques Sacon in 1521. There are two issues: in the present edition, the name of the publisher appears on the titles and colophon; the other is anonymous. The Bible historiale is the first French prose translation of the whole of the Scriptures, produced by Guyart des Moulins between 1292 and 1295 from the Historia scholastica of Pierre le Mangeur and the Vulgate of Saint Jerome. The first edition was published around 1498 by Antoine Vérard, followed by numerous editions in Paris and Lyon. Very beautiful 19th century bindings in imitation of Renaissance masterpieces. From the library of N. M. Thierry, with bookplate. One facsimile leaf in the second volume (f. AA8); marginal restorations to the two titles and to a few text leaves; repair with loss of a few words at the top of f. m4 of volume I; a few small scattered wetnesses, stains and soiling; two rubbed corners. Without the final 2 blank ff. Bechtel, B-168 - Baudrier, II, 2 - Gültlingen, IV, 99, n°3 - Brunet, II, 183 - Chambers, n°54 -Delaveau & Hillard, n°330.
