[Revelationes celestes preelecte sponse Christi beate Birgitte vidue, de regno Suecie, octo libris divise]. Nuremberg, Friedrich Peypus for Johann Koberger, 1517. In-folio, stiff vellum, first board decorated with a large painted portrait in an oval frame of embossed foliage (22 x 15.5 cm) and three metal brooches, second board decorated with a large mute coat of arms, topped with a cardinal's hat, embossed and highlighted in gilt, spine titled in ink throughout, red edges (Early binding). Third Latin edition, after the princeps edition published in Lübeck in 1492 and the first edition published by Johann Koberger in 1500. Beautiful gothic printing with two columns decorated with large historiated lettering and small initials on a black background. This work gathers the mystical visions and prophecies received by Saint Brigid of Sweden (1303-1373) from the 1340s onwards, dictated by her in Swedish and translated into Latin by Peter Olafsson or Peter of Skänninge, and then compiled into a collection by Alfonso de Vadaterra, former bishop of Jaen, in 1377-1380. The work is organized in eight books, followed by orations and a supplement entitled Revelationes extravagantes. A rubricated copy with colored lettering. The volume has been placed in a reused painted binding decorated with a beautiful portrait of the saint attributable to the Italian forger Icilio Federico Joni (1866-1946), who specialized in the forgery of paintings of the Sienese Quattrocento, making in particular famous pastiches of tavolette di Biccherna. Missing the first two leaves (ff. a1-2). Binding restored, small losses at the top of the portrait and at the scroll frames, two jaws cracked. Fairfax Murray, n°74 - Adams, B-2834 - Brunet, I, 1259.
