of very devout orations, extracted from the writings of the holy Fathers and illustrious Doctors of the Holy Church, both ancient and modern. Liège, Léonard Strele at the expense of Jaspar Ostreman, 1594. Small in-8, printed reused parchment, decorated with a large illumination on the first cover and an illuminated lettering on the spine, gilt and chased edges (modern binding). Very rare Liège printing.
This volume, dedicated to Thierry de Lynden, vicar general of Liège, was printed at the expense of a merchant of the city, Jaspar Ostremann, living at the sign of the Golden Comb.
The work is decorated with rather naive woodcut vignettes in the text. The title and the introductory leaves are printed in red and black.
Charming binding in an illuminated parchment leaf, taken from an early 16th century edition by Ludolf of Saxony (Le Grant vita Christi translate de latin en françoys par Guillaume Lemenand, folio lxii). The page used is printed on vellum, ruled, rubricated and decorated with a large figure delicately painted with white and gold highlights (85 x 85 mm), on the theme of confession and penitence, and with two lettrines painted in blue, red and gold on the spine and the first flyleaf.
The volume has retained its original gilt and chased edges, with a lattice pattern.
Illumination scratched with several nicks; some foxing and a few small marginal tears.
Theux, I, 11.
