Sententiarum textus, per capitula ac capitum § recenter distinctus. Basel, Adam Petri for Ludwig Hornken, bookseller in Cologne, 1516. In-folio, stamped fawn calf, large frame of basins and grotesques in cold set with fillets, central rectangle decorated with five vertical scrolls of foliage and flies, spine decorated with gilt fleurons, smooth edges (Binding of the period). Second edition of the Sentences of Pierre Lombard printed by Adam Petri on behalf of Ludwig Hornken. The first one is from 1513. Very fine Basel printing in gothic type, on two columns. The title of the volume, printed in red and black, is adorned with a beautiful woodcut frame by Urs Graf and Hornken's mark, which is repeated in the colophon. The Sentences of the scholastic theologian Peter Lombard, composed around 1146, is one of the most important books of the Middle Ages. It was the main theological textbook in use in European universities from the 13th to the 16th century. Beautifully bound in cold-stamped tan calf. The copy comes from the legacy of Pierre Frizon (1586-1651), canon penitentiary of the church of Rheims and vicar general of the Grande Aumônerie de France, to the library of the cathedral chapter of Rheims, with ex-libris and ex-dono engraved on the title page. Lack of skin on one corner, spine formerly rebound and damaged with missing parts, headpieces restored. Pale spotting and a few scattered spots, worm work in the lower corner of a few leaves. Adams, P-898 - Hollstein, XI, 288.
