This fifteenth-century ascetic treatise inspired Queen Marguerite of Navarre's poem Miroir de l'âme pécheresse. Henry of Langenstein (c. 1325-1397) is also known as Henry of Hesse the Elder. Jacob of Jüterbogk (ca. 1385-1465) was a Cistercian in Paradiz, Poland, and a Carthusian at St. Agnes near Erfurt. Curious woodcut on verso of title, depicting Adam, Eve, and the Serpent in the Garden of Eden; in naive style, the vignette is set in a border animated with peacocks and fabulous beings.This Basel incunabulum is the earliest edition cited by bibliographers of the Manual of Inner Reformation by Gerard Zerbolt of Zutphen (1367-1398), one of the earliest members of the Deventer Brotherhood of the Common Life.
