European school; 20th century. "Horses". Bronze and marble base. Measurements: 24 x 32 x 20 cm; 3 x 34 x 21 cm (base). Sculptural group made in round bronze, representing two horses in freedom, captured with a precision, a naturalism and an expressiveness that denote not only mastery on the part of the sculptor, but also a careful study of the natural. The piece stands out for its subject matter, as it shows a mother bringing her muzzle close to the little foal. During the 19th century, animal-themed sculpture finally achieved a status of its own within the context of Romantic sculpture. Seeking to distance themselves from the classical sculptural ideal, many artists saw animal themes as a new means of expression, linked to the emotional and irrational aspects of nature, in a distinctly Romantic sense.
