Jacopo Ponte, Gen. Bassano (Werkstatt) Lot n° 2

Jacopo Ponte, called Bassano (workshop) Annunciation to the shepherds Oil on wood. 26,3 x 37,3 cm. In carved and gilded Louis XIII oak frame with laurel leaf frieze. Present panel adapts with minor modifications Jacopo Bassano's large-scale composition dated around 1575 in the National Gallery, Prague (inv. no. 09026). Of the approximately 30 surviving religious night scenes associated with Jacopo Bassano, not a single one is signed. In 1992, Livia Alberton Vinco da Sesso suggested that many of these unsigned nocturnal scenes were painted by his sons Francesco or Leandro after a prototype of their father. It is quite possible that Francesco Bassano is the author of our painting.
