Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam, Domestic interior with a family of four.
Oil on canvas, doubled. 1658. 67,5 x 60,7 cm. Signed and dated lower left on the brace of the table. Framed.
Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam got an early impression of the hectic activity of a craft business in his father's tailor store. He thus grew up in an environment that probably inspired him to make tailor and cobbler stores, of which he painted dozens of variants in 1653-64, his pictorial subjects. Van Brekelenkam received his artistic training in Leiden, and in February 1648 he joined the newly founded Guild of St. Luke. After the departure of Jan Steen and Gabriel Metsu, van Brekelenkam became the main producer of moral pictures of folk life. He shows families praying at table or taking the meal afterwards. However, portraits of the well-off bourgeoisie with far less interaction have also survived, such as the present family portrait.
