Karl Millner, Sunlit path with steep rock face on a mountain lake (Lago Maggiore).
Oil on canvas, doubled. 101 x 129 cm. Signed lower right. Framed.
His favorite subject, the high mountain landscape, Karl Millner has hiked. On extensive tours through the Alps, he filled his sketchbooks, and then composed his romantic paintings from these impressions in the studio. The present view, probably of Lake Maggiore, can be considered one of his major works. It combines everything that his contemporaries appreciated in Millner's painting: the detailed depiction of craggy rock faces overgrown with roots, the reflective water surface, a staffage depicted in vivid colors, and the warm light of the late afternoon, in which the sunset already announces itself. It is precisely in this light that the influence of Carl Rottmann, who was a decisive model for Millner from his artistic beginnings, becomes clear.
