Carl Rottmann, River Landscape with Farmhouse near Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Oil on wove paper, mounted on wood. (1823/24). 29.6 x 26.5 cm. Framed.
After moving from Heidelberg to Munich, Carl Rottmann devoted himself primarily to Bavarian landscape motifs. Since 1822 he had traveled extensively in the Salzburg and Werdenfelser Land as well as the Inn Valley. This landscape section is located near Garmisch-Partenkirchen and shows a farmhouse in the Alpine style on rocky ground, the architectural details are rendered with great meticulousness. In front of it, a thundering waterfall cascades down, whereby the mountain stream and the foaming spray are rather picturesque in contrast to the architecture. A wooded valley stretches out in the middle ground, with the Wetterstein mountains looming in the distance. An unfinished study sheet, on which Rottmann worked in the Bavarian Alps in 1823, prepares the motif of the mountain hut (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett, Inv.-Nr. 3). A mountain landscape with a river course, related in its layout and dated to 1823, is in the Schäfer Collection, Schweinfurt. The present landscape, however, is more cohesive and was therefore probably painted somewhat later.
With a confirmation from Dr. Erika Rödiger-Diruf (statement of 22.6.2011). She will include the picture in the catalog raisonné.
