L. Fröhlich-Bum: Neu aufgetauchte Gemälde Jacopo Bassano, in: Jahrbuch der Kunsthistorischen Sammlungen in Wien, Neue Folge, vol.l IV, 1930, p. 241 (as Jacopo Bassano). - E. Arslan: I Bassano, Milan, 1960, p. 228, fig. 265 (as Giambattista da Ponte?).
Giovanni Battista da Ponte was the third son of the painter Jacopo Bassano, the founder of a successful family workshop in Veneto. His brothers Francesco and Leandro have a bigger name. Except for the top paintings of Jacopo, Francesco and Leandro, however, it is a difficult task to identify the works of each brother stylistically. Instead, the "Bassano style," with its distinctive subject matter and unusual color palette, was cultivated equally by all the brothers.
With its original frame, the present painting forms a harmonious Seicento ensemble of particular charm.
