Reyer Claesz, gen. Suycker
Wide landscape with finding the cup of Benjamin
Oil on canvas, doubled. 79.5 x 126 cm.
Monogrammed lower right (on one of the bags): R C.
Reyer Claesz, gen. Suycker, can be traced to Haarlem from 1620. Our painting with the monogram RC, characteristic for the artist, shows a wide landscape with mighty trees and two cities in the middle ground. In the foremost plane, a biblical scene plays out stage-like (Gen. 44, 1-12): After Joseph was sold by his brothers to Egypt, he rose there to become the chief administrator of the land. When his brothers came to Egypt during a famine to buy grain, Joseph hid a golden cup in the sack of his youngest brother Benjamin. Our picture shows the finding of the cup by Pharaoh's soldiers.
