Fragment of a capital. Toledo, 14th century.
Stone.
Measurements: 14 x 33 x 18 cm.
Fragment of a Romanesque capital in which the figure of a winged beast can be seen. The medieval bestiary acquired notable importance in Romanesque art: animals, both real and fantastic, mixed mythology and religion and became striking images for the common people. There were both animals of good (lions or birds that symbolised pure souls due to their ability to ascend to the heavens) and animals of evil (the monkey, as a grotesque caricature of man himself and his baser instincts, or the serpent, the quintessential symbol of sin itself).
