A. Hall 10,80 x 8,50 cm (4,25 x 3,35 in.) Provenance : Anonymous sale ; Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Thierry de Maigret, 9 June 2011, n° 123 Exhibitions : 'Exposition d'art ancien', Nantes, 1924, n° 569, according to a label on the reverse Comment : "Mr. Hall is too big for a too small art. In short, in his house, Van Dyck lives again; Brilliant, light, easy and full of finesse, I find him admirable. He charms me unceasingly1. " The critics, who are not always tender towards miniaturists, are full of praise for the Swedish Pierre-Adolphe Hall, who settled in Paris in 1766, was accepted at the Royal Academy in 1769 and from then on exhibited regularly at the Salon. The miniature we present, of good dimensions, probably represents Anne-Joseph de Louet de Murat de Nogaret, marquis de Calvisson (1715-1781), at his work table. 1 'Judgement on our painters and sculptors', 1781, quoted by Fr. Villot, 'Hall. Célèbre miniaturiste du XVIIIe siècle', Paris, 1867, p. 26. This lot, according to the regulations in force, has a CIC and is in free circulation within the European Union.
