Théophile Alexandre STEINLEN (1859-1923), Artistide BRUANT (1851-1925). Walk of the Backs. Drawing in Indian ink and blue pencil with autograph manuscript of Aristide Bruant. 1893. Height. 32 - Width: 24 cm (stuck in full) The song "Marche des dos" written in 1889 by Aristide Bruant is published in the collection Dans la Rue, vol I, p.57 to 60. This drawing was published in Le Mirliton, January 13, 1893. It is listed in the Steinlen archives of Mesdames Claude Orset and Elisabeth Marechaux Laurentin for the publication of the catalog raisonné of the work of Théophile Alexandre Steinlen. Théophile Alexandre STEINLEN (1859-1823) arrived in Paris in 1881 and drew for the Petit-Demange establishments, specialists in Alsatian cloth. He also began drawing for certain newspapers and illustrating books in 1884. In 1884, Steinlen produced his first composition for the chansonnier Aristide BRUANT (1851-1925). This was the beginning of a long collaboration that would last until 1895: Jacques Christophe, in Steinlen, partitions musicales illustrées, chansons et monologues d'Aristide Bruant, Aléas, 2003, lists 116 titles and about 500 published drawings. He does not count the original drawings. Steinlen did some of his drawings at Bruant's home, who wrote in 1887, "but also how good it feels when I come back here, all alone, without anyone but a friend from time to time! The most faithful of them all, the painter Steinlen, is a laconic man of my kind. He says three words every half hour. We understand each other very well. (see Jeanne Landre, Aristide BRUANT, La nouvelle Société d'Edition 1930, quoted by Jacques Christophe, aforementioned work). Steinlen's drawings would evolve over the years and his illustrations would become more personal as time went by, especially for the drawings done for Gil Blas Illustré from 1891 and for Mirliton from 1893. Steinlen's drawings illustrating Aristide Bruant's songs were also published in the two volumes of Dans la rue, published by Aristide Bruant himself in 1888 and 1895. La Marche des dos and les petits Joyeux (or the ups and downs of the life of the little marlous) are among Bruant's best known songs. Expert : Cabinet Marechaux, Mrs Elisabeth Marechaux Laurentin
