History
This study of very good quality was conceived on the occasion of the realization of the "Oath of the Jeu de Paume", great historical fresco ordered by the king Louis-Philippe for the museum of the history of France, in the historical gallery of the castle of Versailles. The painting is now on deposit at the Museum of the Revolution in Vizille (inv. MV 1950).
A history painter, Auguste Couder was a student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Jacques-Louis David. The latter considers him as one of "those of my students who have distinguished themselves the most" in his list of thirty (handwritten notes kept at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris). He exhibited at the Salon and is present in many public collections in France and abroad.
