The shipwreck of Aeneas. Copper engraving after Perino del Vaga. 23 x 42,5 cm. Circa 1547. B. 104, Massari 107.
This rare copperplate engraving is one of the most artistically important prints from Bonaone's oeuvre. It was based on a lost fresco by Perino for the Palazzo Doria in Genoa, which he executed in 1528. The sheet captivates by the manneristic elegance of the representation and by its very concentrated, technically highly developed execution. Tightly executed hatching patterns alternate with loosely and more freely treated sections, giving the depiction a visual conciseness all of its own. The figure conception is also reminiscent of upper Italian contemporaries such as Giovanni Battista d'Angolo and Giovanni Battista Fontana. - Excellent, nuanced impression, trimmed to platemark. Kl. fine hairline crack repaired at top, minor lack of preservation, but the overall impression very nice.
