Self-portrait of Baccio Bandinelli. Copper engraving after Bandinelli. 29,5 x 22,1 cm. Passavant VI, 124, II, Robert-Dumesnil IX, 181, 2 II, Rubach 397 II.
Passavant and Dumesnil list only four and five engravings of this artist, respectively, about whose life and work we have only scanty information. Like his compatriot Nicolas Beatrizet, della Casa (probably the Italianized variant of de la Maison) probably came from Lorraine and was active in Rome around 1543-1547, where he worked for publishers such as Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. The present engraving goes back to the painted self-portrait of Bandinelli, which is in the Uffizi in Florence. - Quite excellent, strong impression with fine margins around the border line, partly with quite fine margins, with the publisher's address of Lafreri. Glue traces along the back margins verso, the right margin partly back-foxed verso, isolated very faint foxing, otherwise in excellent condition. From the collection Jules Michelin, Paris (Lugt 1490).
