The office of "familiar" or "familiar" of the Holy Office of the Inquisition was granted to laymen. They became secular assistants of the Inquisition, had the right to bear arms, received income and enjoyed privileges. They were subject to a special jurisdiction reserved for all those who were part of the inquisitorial apparatus.
