An officer's helmet and cuirass
dating: Third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: Austria, Black-lacquered iron skull with gilded brass mounts, big badge with monogram 'F 1' at the front, imperial eagle above, high crest embossed with a lion and a snake, laurel leaves on the border, complete with the very rare, original, yellow and black chenille crest. Wide chin-strap armoured with gilded brass plates and decorated with floral motifs in bas-relief, the last pate featuring a lion's head. Leather sweat-band. Black lacquered iron cuirass complete with a rare leather strap (cuirasses of this kind were worn without breast-plate) and with gilded mounts. Small damages, black lacquer refreshed. A beautiful and rare officer's set for cuirassiers, dragoons and light cavalry – troops that were called the 'Deutsche Kavallerie' of the Austrian Imperial Army. height with cuirass 77 cm.
