The examination of Rembrandt is an essential aspect in the work of Fritz Aigner, who himself was called the "Rembrandt of Linz". The "trick with the light" is that Rembrandt transforms the incident light directly into color, but this is not explicitly shown in this version. What remains is an almost cubistically alienated countenance of Rembrandt, whose eyes seem to develop a life of their own in the focus of the incident light. The work is of rare reduced colorfulness in an impasto and free application of paint, which creates a symbiosis of Rembrandt and Aigner. Very nice framing. Provenance: Werner Höfer Collection - Berghammer Gallery - Private Collection Linz.
