A radical departure from the essentially pre-war design of its predecessor, FIAT's newborn featured a unitary construction, an opening canvas roof and fully independent suspension while the engine was mounted in the rear. An immense success for FIAT, nearly 3,000,000 of these lovely little cars had been sold when production ceased in 1975. In the early 1960s, the original company closed and the brothers separated to found new companies. Attilio's new design company lasted only until 1971, but the one founded by Domenico, namely 'Giannini Automobili Spa,' survives to this day. In the same year it introduced its modified version of the small FIAT, the 500TV, and throughout the decade and into the 1970s Giannini-prepared cars battled with those of its rival Abarth on European circuits. In 1966 Maurizio Zanetti became Italian Champion driving a FIAT 500 prepared by Giannini. In recent years Giannini has specialized in the production of limited edition versions of FIAT production models.
