Provenance: Aimé Delarge collection, according to an old label on the back
Our paintings, atypical in terms of their subjects in the artist's career, belonged to a series of twelve models given by Schall to the publisher for the illustrations of John Milton's "Paradise Lost", published by Defer de Maisonneuse in 1792 and 1793. In the book, the compositions were engraved by Alexandre L. Clément, Nicolas Colibert, Mme de Monchy and Jean-Baptiste Gauthier.
