Alphonse MARTINVILLE. Monsieur Crédule, or Il faut se méfier du vendredy. Manuscript. S.l.n.d. (circa 1812). In-4, 21 x 26.5 cm, contemporary pink boards with label. 200/300 Soleinne, I-2446 /// (1f.)-60-(4f. blank). laid paper, brown, legible and regular handwriting. Handwritten copy of a Comédie en un acte et en prose, mêlée de couplets, decorated with 2 watercolor compositions in the text. The piece is referenced by Paul Lacroix in the Soleinne library catalog. Alphonse Martainville, journalist, chansonnier, writer and fervent royalist, was the author of some thirty vaudeville plays. Monsieur Crédule was performed at the Théâtre des Variétés on April 28, 1812. According to a handwritten note, this copy belonged to Étienne Bourgeois de Lavalazelle (from Guéret), who is also said to be the author of a small portrait and a large watercolor composition depicting the play's final scene.
