Chambermaid to the dauphine Marie Josèphe de Saxe, Mme Chalut de Verin, née Elisabeth Varanchan (Marseille, 1718-Paris, 1780) obtained a position as fermier général for her husband in 1753, another for her brother Louis in 1762, and numerous pensions for her family. At the Dauphine's request, she oversaw the education of Aurore Dupin, illegitimate daughter of the Maréchal de Saxe (future George Sand), and was godmother to her son Maurice Dupin. She had a long affair with Jean-François Marmontel who broke up in 1777. Carmontelle painted her portrait (collections of the Condé Museum, Chantilly).
