Bernardino de Obregon founded a religious congregation in Madrid in 1586, attached to the Franciscan Third Order, whose mission was to help the sick. In 1606, two brothers set off on foot to Rome to ask the Pope for authorization to open other communities throughout Spain. Surprised by a storm in the mountains, they saw themselves dying when they noticed a glimmer of light on a summit. Having reached it, they discovered a shrine with a statue of the Virgin crowned, the Infant Jesus on her left arm and a scepter in her right hand. Returning with the statue, they took it to the Pope, who was convinced by the Marian protection and granted their request. This was the beginning of a devotion that would spread throughout the Hispanic colonies.
