Claude BONNEFOND (Lyon 1796 - 1860) Study of a monk Original canvas Height : 41 cm Width : 33 cm Signed and dated lower left 1837 Dimensions with frame: 57 x 47.5 cm (Restorations and minor accidents to the frame) A pupil of Pierre Revoil in Lyon, Bonnefond was protected by the Duc de Berry in his youth, who bought several him several works. The death of his patron prompted him to try his luck in Paris, where he joined Orsel in Guérin's studio. When Guérin was appointed director of the Villa Médicis, our painter joined him in Rome Rome from 1825 to 1830. Following in the footsteps of Léopold Robert, Bonnefond developed picturesque subjects drawn from everyday Italian life, as did François-Joseph Navez, Jean-Victor Schnetz and Schnetz and Pierre Bonirotte. The vein exemplified by our painting, somewhere between neo-classicism and romanticism romanticism, was and still is a great success. CABINET TURQUIN.
