Pair of 16th century capitals.
Carved and gilded wood.
The wooden bases are from a later period.
Measurements: 35 x 30 x 30 cm.
Pair of late Renaissance composite Corinthian capitals. The acanthus leaves have been carved on the gilded surface forming a vegetal decoration in bas-relief which is finished off with large protruding scrolls. During the Renaissance there was a return to Greek and Roman architectural orders, with the Corinthian order being the most widely reinterpreted for its profusion of vegetal decoration.
