MARCO DAL PINO (Attr.le) (Siena 1521 - Naples 1583) Saint Andrew the Apostle led to martyrdom Tempera grassa and oil on pine panel The painting is supposed to be an important and valuable testimony of the Sienese master's artistic production during his first stay in Rome, where he collaborated with Perin Del Vaga and Daniele da Volterra. The scene of the Saint's martyrdom that took place in Patras on November 30, 60 CE under Nero's empire finds its setting not in first-century CE Greece but in the Eternal City, 16th-century Rome. The religious building with the walnut tree placed in the background of the painting has been cleverly identified with the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome characterized by the presence of the hexagonal dome and the Lombard-style Augustinian bell tower. Tradition has it that this important house of worship stood in a suburban area of the Urbe characterized precisely by the presence of a large walnut tree planted at the exact burial site of Emperor Nero. The work most likely served as a model for master Guido Reni for the creation between 1609-1610 of the fresco depicting St. Andrew led to martyrdom preserved in the Oratory of Sant'Andrea al Celio. The work comes with a certificate of free circulation. Provenance: Former personal collection of an antiquarian from Emilia. 210 x 121 cm.
