We would like to thank the cabinet Chanoit for its kind collaboration.
Austrian-born painter Rudolf Ernst made several trips to the Orient: Morocco, Egypt and Turkey.
These multiple journeys nourished the Orientalist iconography of his work.
In this painting, we find one of his favorite motifs: the palace guard. The meticulous polychrome architecture, the rendering of the tiger's fur and the rich fabrics are typical of Rudolf Ernst's work.
His attention to detail is also evident in the guard's costume and the rendering of the palace architect's materials. The use of a predominantly warm palette underlines the exoticism of the scene.
