A Paris, chez Barbin, 1694, in-4 bound in full old-fashioned basane, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleur-de-lys, gilt roulette framing the boards. Jesuit binding embossed with the numeral I.H.S, surmounted by a crucifix and supported by the nails of the Passion. One spine completely split, corners dulled.
Illustrated with 6 engravings by Clouzier (the first 5 offering a portrait of the character studied) and 6 culs-de-lampe (pages 275 to 278 are missing).
First edition of the only published volume of this attempt to edit Plutarch's Lives of Illustrious Men, in André Dacier's translation (Brunet IV, 739), devoted to the lives of Theseus, Romulus, Lycurgus, Numa Pompilius, Solon and Publicola.
