Bottle of Château Pape Clément, Grand Cru Classé, double Magnum, 1982. Category: red wine. Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux. Level: B Slight damage to the sealing wax and detached label. Six-litre bottle of Château Pape Clément, Grand Cru Classé, 1982 vintage. Planted in 1300, Château Pape Clément is the oldest wine estate in Bordeaux, having harvested its 700th vintage in 2006. It was a gift to Bertrand de Goth on his appointment as Archbishop of Bordeaux, made by his brother, Berald. It was named after the name adopted by Bertrand on his appointment as pope, Clement V; on his election in 1306 he gave the estate to his successor as archbishop, Cardinal Arnaud de Canteloup. Bertrand, who would later move the papacy to Avignon near Châteauneuf-du-Pape, planted this original vineyard with red grapes. The white grapes were planted on the other side of the river near the town of Lormont. The vineyard remained the property of the archbishopric of Bordeaux until the French Revolution, when it was nationalised and sold as a national asset.
