Edouard-Marcel SANDOZ (1881-1971) Deux fennecs assis - 1922/1924 Bronze sculpture with shaded brown patina C. Signed on the terrace H: 25.9 ; W: 34.3 ; D: 27.2 cm Exhibition: - "La Kasbah", Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1924 Note: Very probably a unique artist's print (our copy is the only one known). The Fennec was undoubtedly one of Sandoz's favorite animals. He had several of them in his personal menagerie, and was therefore able to study them with great attention and precision. A first fennec was offered to him by Del Diaz, president of Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, in 1920, to encourage him to accept his proposal to travel to North Africa the following year. Sandoz took part in his first Orientalist exhibition, entitled "Maroc vu par les artistes contemporains", held at the Galerie Georges Petit from November 1922 to January 1923. He repeated the experience the following year with the exhibition "La Kasbah", alongside Jacques Majorelle. Our model was presented to the public at this event. Provenance: - Jaccottet Collection - Robert Zehil Collection, Monaco Bibliography: "Sandoz. Catalog Raisonné" by Félix Marcilhac (our copy reproduced under no. 607).
