LÊ QUOC LOC (1918-1987) Rare two-door lacquered wood cabinet with polychrome decoration enhanced with gold, depicting a view of a rice paddy landscape on the outskirts of a village, animated by pavilions amidst abundant vegetation, set against a background of tree-covered mountains. The decor continues on the sides. The black lacquered interior features a shelf and six drawers. Signed L-LÔC lower right on the right-hand side of the cabinet. Dim. 131.5 x 94.1 x 51.8 cm (Wear and chips of lacquer) Born in 1918 in Hung Yên (northern Vietnam), Lê Qu?c L?c is recognized as one of Vietnam's great master lacquerers. He studied at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts in 1936 in the lacquer department under Joseph Inguimberty, graduating in 1942. He set up as a master lacquerer in Hanoi the same year, along with other artists such as Pham Hau, Nguyen Gia Tri, Nguyen Van Ty... A recognized artist during his lifetime, he won numerous awards throughout his career. Lê Qu?c L?c's works are a veritable ode to nature. His favorite subjects, such as village scenes, lakeside landscapes and the use of red and gold to depict lush vegetation and dazzling skies, skilfully reflect man's symbiosis with nature.
