CHAISSAC (Gaston). Beautiful long autograph letter signed "g. chaissac", sl, October 22, 1961, 2 pp. in-folio on interlined paper, in blue pen, to a friend (certainly his gallery owner), with 2 small ORIGINAL DRAWINGS in blue pen (heads) in fine. "[...] I find it hard to understand what all the fuss is about, because it arrived in Vix undamaged, even though it had been packed the same way. But without, of course, having been handled by officials amused and excited by the sight of such objects and with no respect or consideration for them. I once had a painting damaged after I had entrusted it to be framed. [...] These creations have been a considerable amount of work for me, and under the worst possible conditions. This new annoyance can only be a detrimental shock to me, far greater than the loss of these objects. [...] Lately I've been painting on canvas. Several of these paintings are considered good and finished by a major collector, although the drawing is not outlined in my usual way and the white of the ground layer sometimes appears. But will they suit you in these conditions? You should benefit from what is being written these days in Paris about my painting. But the damage done to my poor coffers is probably less than if I had lost the ability to produce my pictorial creations. [...] p.s. the best solution would be for me to go and paint in Italy. And may my next exhibition be even richer in the unexpected."
