Chancellor Hideyoshi was the second of three unifiers of Japan during the Sengoku period: Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu . From humble origins, he achieved absolute power over the whole of Japan by unifying and pacifying it.
In this portrait, he is referred to as Mashiba Hisayoshi, one of Hideyoshi's names.
