Mammoth tusk; Middle Palaeolithic: 150,000-100,000 BC.
Carved ivory.
Measurements: 62 x 7 cm; 16 x 42 x 8 cm (base).
Carving entirely made in ivory from a single piece, as revealed by its general shape, which follows the natural curve of the mammoth's tusk. The ivory is from the Middle Palaeolithic, although the carving is from a later period. It depicts a group of fishermen sailing the calm waters of the sea. The carving stands out for its marked preciosity and detail with great relief and chiselled details in various tones, highlighting the patterned motifs of the clothes and details such as textures. It represents a figurative scene, of great complexity and worked on two planes, where we can distinguish numerous characters portrayed individually.
