Large vessel. Ancient Greece, Daunia, ca. 350 BC. Ceramic. Good condition. Provenance: L. Marsh, London 1987; Baptist Cunningham, London 2000; Amok Wiersma, Utrecht 2007; Acquired from the above by Finn Delvaux in 2014, Brussels. Measurements: 26 cm high. Large ceramic vessel with a flaring funnel-shaped mouth and spherical body with opposing angular handles rising to a point. It is decorated with surrounding bands and geometric motifs. Daunian pottery was produced mainly in the regional production centres of Ordona and Canosa di Puglia, from around 700 BC onwards. The earliest paintings on pottery show vessels with geometric motifs. The pottery was moulded by hand, not on a potter's wheel. They were earth-coloured, red, brown or black, with applied decoration. They were painted with diamonds, triangles, circles, crosses, squares, arches, swastikas and other artistic forms.
