Bowl. Nishapur, Iran, 9th century. Ceramic. Measurements: 7.4 x 19.3 x 19.3 cm. A green-glazed ceramic bowl from Nishapur, one of the most important Persian ceramic sites of the Islamic Golden Age, especially in the 9th and 10th centuries. It is decorated with vegetal motifs, forming a four-part compartmentalisation and ornamental continuity in the seat and eaves. During the Islamic Golden Age, Nishapur (Khorasan Razavi Province, northeastern Iran) was one of the great centres of ceramics and related arts. Most of the pottery discovered in Nishapur is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in museums in Tehran and Mashhad. These ceramics show connections with Sassanid and Central Asian art.
