Horus-Sobek. Ancient Egypt, Roman period, 1st century BC-4th century AD. Granite In good condition. Provenance: Manuel Fuentenebro Collection / Ars Histórica Arqueología, Spain, 2014; Exhibited: Ifergan Collection, Málaga (2018-2020). Published: Catalogue "Magical Egypt", Ars Histórica, Madrid, 2012. Size: 5,5 x 10,5 cm. Sobek is the crocodile god, god of fertility, vegetation and life, and is known as "the creator of the Nile" and protector against the dangers in the river Nile. His importance grew in the First Intermediate Period, when he began to merge with the god Horus. This syncretism with Horus is due to one of the versions of the Osiris myth, where he is said to have attended the birth of Horus and helped destroy Seth, who hid in the body of a crocodile to escape unpunished for his crime.
